Doron Langberg and Gaby Collins-Fernandez

November 20 – December 23, 2015

Danese/Corey is delighted to present new paintings by two emerging New York artists, Doron Langberg and Gaby Collins-Fernandez. As students at Yale University, they became friends; as artists, they share studio space and enjoy a continuing dialogue about painting and the very nature of art.

Langberg has said, “using a sexual image can be a powerful vehicle” to demonstrate a broad range of emotions – desire and loss, vulnerability and tenderness. While his paintings are formed by deeply felt personal experience, they transcend their homoerotic content and embrace the universal human condition. He views the figurative tradition through a prism that references art history – Ingres, Bonnard, Manet, Whistler, Homer.

Collins-Fernandez employs seductive materials in her intimately scaled works, animating the surfaces with thick applications of pigment and strips and swags of velvet – its textural delights and associations with garments, curtains, and costume. Snippets of New York street conversation, captured fragments of a highly energetic and diverse urban culture, are embedded within the dense topography of her paintings.

Doron Langberg was the 2011 recipient of The Schoelkopf Travel Prize at Yale University and a finalist for the New York Foundation for the Arts Painting Fellowship in 2015. He earned a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from Yale University. He is the Adjunct Professor in Foundations at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and Painting at Montclair State University. He lives and works in Queens, NY.

Gaby Collins-Fernandez holds a BA from Dartmouth College and an MFA from Yale University. She was the 2013 recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Visual Art Grant Award. She lives and works in Queens, NY.
